One year ago, on April 24th 2013, 1133 people were killed and more than 2500 were injured when the Rana Plaza factory complex collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The social and environmental catastrophes in our fashion supply chains continue. Today, Fashion Revolution Day, is the day that hopefully raises awareness. We don’t want the victims to be forgotten. We don’t want something like this to happen ever again. We want change. Change in the fashion supply chains. Sure, fashion is a force to be reckoned with. Fashion celebrates, provokes, and entertains at the same time. But from today we turn fashion into a force for good. Fashion Revolution Day says enough is enough.
Be curious and find out who made your clothes. Find out who spun the threads, who sewed them together, and who grew the cotton in the first place. Your clothes tell a story even before you wear them. By knowing their story you’ll know more about yourself – and the world of fashion. A story is a good one if it’s a good story, not one that just looks good at first sight.
Over and over again history showed that things can change by the consumer’s power. We all are consumers and we can use the power of fashion to catalyse change. Let’s reconnect the broken links in the supply chain. Fashion Revolution Day is the day we wear our clothes inside-out to help start the beginning of an industry-wide transformation towards a more sustainable future.
