The Libertines - Heart Of The Matter - Video

Context?

Love it or hate it but THE LIBERTINES are back for good, it seems. Yes, they fought more than one fight in the past decade – sometimes for themselves, sometimes with each other. And maybe that’s one of the key messages we get on the meta side of their new clip Heart Of The Matter which is taken off their comeback album Anthems For Doomed You.

Why Should I Watch This?

If you love blood, torture and ever wanted to know how it looks when a band like THE LIBERTINES fights each other director Roger Sargent finally answers your prayers. Witness Pete Doherty, Carl Barât and the rest practising some sadistic pleasures while they are watched by various strangers who are very excited (and even sexually aroused) about what they are witnessing. It looks like the lads had a lot of fun shooting this one.

Anything Else?

So, what’s the deal with this weird new music video? Mr. Sargent answered it via the NME in the following words:

The Libertines have never been a band to lack candour or bravery… almost to a fault. Their honesty, their friendship, has played out in the public domain often with catastrophic consequences. In ‘Heart Of The Matter’, Peter and Carl reflectively talk about the damage and abuse they have caused themselves over the years, openly mystified that they have survived thus far. It’s a catharsis, a bleak, bold and brave one. To that end, when we talked about making the video for the song we all felt it had to be similarly honest. The unsettling subjects could not be shied away from. On the contrary, these had to be faced head on.
