The Melbourne-based acoustic folk trio Woodlock gained first popularity busking the streets of rural and capital cities, releasing three independent EPs up until 2015. Now signed to the label Nettwerk, the three-piece is up for new commitment to action in the form of their new single Start Again. A mellow and catchy folk piece thrives of its straightforward rhythmic acoustic guitar play and subtle percussion – reminiscent of early Ben Howard vibes – and sparkles with a harmonious attitude. For all the carefreeness and buoyancy that illuminates the music’s surface, lyrically singer Zech Walters digs down into a failed marriage, burrowing his way through grief, despair and heartache. It is quite agonising to listen to the anguish of the emotional deep dive Zech is undertaking here. And yet, there is a glimmer of hope that carries this tune all the way through, putting it all back on track eventually. Listen to the piece right here and there’s more to come: The new EP Collateral is due this fall.
