No doubt, Steven Ellison alia FLYING LOTUS is someone special. The electronic music producer showed it again and again within the last years, he proved it in his documentary about his new album and finally he shows that he is worth the hype. His fourth full length album, Until The Quiet Comes comes out these days via Warp Records. On this album he combines different styles electronic music with influences from hiphop and jazz, without ever sounding boring and without giving you the feeling that you heard something like this ever before.
The hype was big – and still is. But now that I listen to this 18 track strong album, which also features collaborations with such fine acts as NIKI RANDA, ERYKAH BADU, THUNDERCAT, THOM YORKE and LAURA DARLINGTON, I have to admit: FLYING LOTUS is worth the hype! And even more: this guy is not only a hype act like some others, this guy will still be there in many years. His inspiration seems endless. And maybe Until The Quiet Comes will be named as the album with which he made it from big to huge, from amazing artist to legend.

In fact Until The Quiet Comes feels like both at the same time a journey through the body and the soul. Like diving into the own body when the album starts and wandering around inside yourself. Asking yourself all these questions you’ll never be able to answer. Where am I from? How come that all this is working? Who build the plan for this? Or is there even one? And if not, why not? And if yes, why? Too many questions during the journey through your own body. And your soul? What even is a soul? Everybody might have his/her very own definition of what the soul is. Maybe we can agree on the point that the soul is what breathes life into the body, right? Again, thousands of questions come up and FLYING LOTUS brings the perfect soundtrack to this.
You don’t even have to be a fan of electronic music, hiphop or jazz to like this record. It may sound strange, but actually it is the perfect album for a lazy day, when everything just goes by. But also listening to it actively will work great, since there are so many things to explore in the songs. So many layers, so many sounds – simply amazing. Not matter if listening to it at daytime or nighttime, Until The Quiet Comes will make you calm down and bring you inner peace. Still you can ask yourself all the questions mentioned above, but you don’t have to. It also can be used a a inner-peace-bringer, as an album that brings you the quiet in moments you miss it. It is calming like the beating of a heart. Just the sound we are in need for these days. Maybe FLYING LOTUS set the Zeitgeist to music.
Wandering around, thinking about deep things until the quiet comes. But for real: Listening to Until The Quiet Comes until the quiet finally comes could be a good deal. Because it will be these songs that will remain in you ears, even when it is silent around you.
NBHAP would like to announce: FLYING LOTUS is a genius! Thanks for this wonderful piece of music.
