MY EMPTY PHANTOM is Jesse Beaman’s one man band. Experimental, instrumental music – somewhere between postrock and ambient.
One guy who writes amazing songs, plays great music and tours a lot – and he does it all alone. So we took the chance to talk to Jesse Beaman aka. MY EMPTY PHANTOM. A project of a single guy, a one man band or a lonesome-orchestra? Find it out. Enjoy.

Hey Jesse, since most of our readers might not know you by now: please introduce yourself.
Hello, my name is Jesse Beaman. I’m a 24 year musician who lives in Austin, Texas.

You’re doing your music all alone. When, where and why did you decide to do so? Was it that you never found other people for a full band? Have you ever thought about making music with others?
I decided to play alone when I moved to Austin when I was 18. Mainly because my band I moved to the city with stopped playing music together. I started playing real shows in 2008. Since then I haven’t really even looked for anyone to play in MY EMPTY PHANTOM but soon will be adding members in the near future.

What’s the story behind “MY EMPTY PHANTOM”?
I started MY EMPTY PHANTOM as more of a music and art project…not really as a performing thing. It was more of paintings and short songs I was posting on the internet. Once I started to play shows people started looking at me as a one man band. I’m still trying to complete my vision with film, art and the sound for MY EMPTY PHANTOM.

What are the reactions on your music – when they hear it recorded and when they see you live?
Seems that the one man band thing stands out to people, although I don’t really think about that…I get too caught up in putting the sounds and melodies together I forget I’m alone up there on stage.
My live shows are different then my recording and people bring that up to me sometimes. Some people have sent me some really moving words about my music, I hear the word beautiful the most. I think my music provokes a lot of emotion so I’m lucky enough to hear some really deep things from people about both the recordings and live performances.

What are your main-influences when you write songs?
The ups and downs of life. The experiences of life. Gaining and loosing things. I think about stuff in detail…this list could go on…

In March/April you will tour Europe for the first time. What are your expectations?
I hear great things about Europe. Everyone says it’s beautiful so I’m expecting that. I’ve never been there. I’m excited and happy to perform so far away from home. The shows should be great and I know I’ll be meeting some great people. I expect the beer to be good too.

Since Nothing But Hope And Passion is about a bit more than music, what do you think of when you hear the word “passion” and what does it mean to you?
When I think of passion I think of a natural feeling to do something you really feel needs to get done and accomplishing a personal goal. If you have a passion you should follow through with it and don’t let things hold you back from doing so.

What are the things you hope for? In your personal lifes, as musician and in general…
I hope to get my music out there enough to inspire others to make music. That alone would be great.
I’d also eventually like to get involved in things that help people around the world who need help.

What can people expect from MY EMPTY PHANTOM in the future and why should everyone spread the word about you?

Expect more music, more touring outside of the USA, additional musicians for certain performances and I’m also writing non instrumental music that I will probably just go under my name Jesse Beaman in the near future. People should spread the word cause I’ll be around for a while.

The last words belong to you…
Hope for the best and follow your Passion!
