There is no way to escape Dutch psychedelic rockers BIRTH OF JOY who just released their new album Prisoner in early March. The band tours heavily this year and plays tons of festival shows. Right now they are on tour in Germany, presented by NOTHING BUT HOPE AND PASSION. So we took the chance to talk to the band members to give joy a birth. Seven songs under the motto ‘The Birth of Joy with BIRTH OF JOY‘.
Just seven songs/artists we really like! We like a lot of different types of music and it all depends a bit of the mood we are in. So, if you ask us to make a new selection in two weeks, you might get a totally different list! Just like what you can expect from our shows: nothing is fixed from the start, it’s all flexible and changes at the moment!

Kevin Stunnenberg, BIRTH OF JOY‘s singer & guitarist, chose NINE INCH NAILS’ Closer.
When I heard this song for the first it totally grabbed me. The words that don’t lie and the beats, sounds and vibe are earth lifting, dark and exciting. Total killer on the dancefloor and in bed or where ever you want.

Kevin Stunnenberg, BIRTH OF JOY‘s singer & guitarist, chose THE DOORS’ When The Music Is Over.
This song is a trip by it self. Listening to this song is like slowely entering a hot bath of mysticism. Music is your only friend!!

Gertjan Gutman, BIRTH OF JOY‘s organist & bass player, chose CANNED HEAT’s I’m Her Man.
For me this song is the perfect boogie. Boogie how boogie should be. And besides the perfect boogie, Canned Heat has the boogiest bassplayer ever existed on earth.

Gertjan Gutman, BIRTH OF JOY‘s organist & bass player, chose DEEP PURPLE’s Hard Lovin Man.
Listen to this (and especially the organ of course) you’ll understand my sound, and in a way my improvisation style. So here it is! Organ is a cool instrument. This is the fucking proof! So never again call the keyboard player a nerd.

Bob Hogenelst, BIRTH OF JOY‘s drummer and backing vocalist, chose BLIND WILLY JOHNSON’s Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground.
One of the best blues songs I’ve ever heard. The slide guitar plays this really dark melody, together whit his beautiful voice, you can hear the suffering this man has had. He doesn’t sing any lyrics, it’s just moaning.

Bob Hogenelst, BIRTH OF JOY‘s drummer and backing vocalist, chose TOM WAITS’ Jesus Is Gonna Be Here.
Tom Waits on double bass and Larry Taylor on slide guitar. 2 of my favourite musicians together. It sounds if like it’s been recorded early in the morning, after a night of heavy drinking and drug abuse. Waits’ voice sounds more badass than ever before
