We all know that the Berlin music scene is one of the most diverse and productive ones out there – not only in Germany but on an international scale as well. This time we would like to introduce you to singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Johanna Amelie, one of the city’s artists to look out for. Citing folk icons like Regina Spektor, PJ Harvey and Joni Mitchell as her main influences, her music embraces us like a warm summer breeze, creating an enchanting sonic space around a mellow and captivating voice. Having already shared stages across the globe with acts such as Patti Smith, Gordon Raphael and Alin Coen, she is here to share the song Being from her freshly released new EP One Moon.
Led by a clear piano line throughout the piece, added by bits of electric guitar and a horn section towards the middle of the song, Being creates a somewhat dreamy ambiance with Amelie’s substantial voice at its core that at once renders a soothing and yet dramatic performance. Circling around the themes of boundaries and personal autonomy, Amelie herself states that she was „trying to describe the way I feel about being a human being in a complicated modern world. I wanted to write about something serious in a playful way.“ One thing’s for sure: With haunting ballads such as Being, Johanna Amelie is setting out on a brighter future and will certainly be on our watch.
