Hailing from Wuppertal, Germany, Maria Basel is one of these artists that caught our love by storm last year – and how could it be any different? Her debut EP Layers presents pieces that are full of sonic contrasts, melodic harmonies, a classical piano root at the core of each song, not to mention the breathtaking vocal performance, piercing through it all. Fusing electronic vibes with hints of Jazz and RnB, the classical trained producer, musician and performer is paving her way here towards a solo adventure that is remarkable and promising to witness.
“The songs on the EP are really a layer of my inner world, a memory, a process, an experience, all bound together, personal and honest”
Traveller, one of the balladesque pieces on the EP, comes without sturdy beats and instead dives deep into melancholic waters of sound, beautifully arranged around a mellow piano setting, ornamented by the atmospheric flow of the singer’s voice. “Traveller tells a story about a man and his path in life and the relentless pursuit of his aims and goals”, Maria Basel says. The emotional density this piece reaches is truly fascinating and leaves one with a feeling of awe and affection, which is due both to the sonic maturity as well as the lyrical deep dive into the heart of a restless mind.
“Fast traveller
You escape everything
You’re always moving on
You have to move on”
Don’t miss this haunting acoustic version of the song that Maria Basel recorded for us.
