Daily Tune: Get tangled in ‘Wires’, the new solo single of Samaris singer JFDR

The latest glimpse of her upcoming solo debut ‘Brazil.’

by

Who is it?

Iceland’s Jófríður Ákadóttir, also a member GANGLY, PASCAL PINON and SAMARIS (who put out one of our favourite albums of 2016). Ákadóttir has been at the heart of some of the best music to come out of Iceland over the past five years, and now, as JFDR, she’s stepping out on her own with her debut solo album. After White Sun and Airborne, we know have the third taste of that record, new single Wires.

Why should you listen to it?

Wires is a song constructed with clockwork delicacy, a series of parts that interlock precisely to create a fragile, delicate masterpiece with a blend of folk and electronica in its DNA. A fluttering beat opens the song up, which then gives way to shivering guitars for the song’s cathartic release point. As a lyricist, Ákadóttir prefers to write shadows than outright images, lines like ‘we are the current, flowing fast down the river’ giving the listener room to wonder. What makes Wires special is how unique it sounds: Ákadóttir writes songs like no one else can.

What next?

The debut album from JFDR, Brazil, is out on March 17.
