We here at NOTHING BUT HOPE AND PASSION have been getting very excited about Californian Lauren Hillman, better known as KOTOMI, recently. We’re included her singles Swimming and Shiny in our ‘Sound Of The Day’ section, and she’s also put out an excellent collaboration with CYRIL HAHN, entitled Grace recently. So naturally, we’re delighted to bring you the premiere of her next single, Free.

Free is initially airier and more melancholic than her previous work, but still makes sure to pack in a slick chorus. It fact the song moves through a number of stylistically different stages, a deliberate choice says Hillman:

‘The song is about realizing that the person you were with, was never really with you. When a relationship has run its course, we reflect on it in a non-linear fashion. We think about the present, then the past, back to the present, and then to the future.  The song works the same way. It begins on a sombre note with a remembrance of the past, a confrontation in the present, a note for the future, and back to being in the present with your own self-worth. It’s about being free. Jo Pusateri played drums, Justin Burrow played guitar, I programmed the beat/synths and played bass, and John Culjak wrote the lyrics.’

Free will be available via KOTOMI’s Soundcloud and Bandcamp pages from September 2nd.
