Seven Songs with… Nadine Shah

by

Nadine Shah - Seven SongsComparisons are quite easily made. Sometimes they can be flattering, but sometimes also irritating. And in other cases they just fit. There’s nothing wrong with comparing British songwriter NADINE SHAH to big heroes like PJ HARVEY and NICK CAVE. Her bluesy songs, full of passion, desperation and other exestential topics of life should be justification enough. Hey, and if big players DEPECHE MODE took her as support on their recent world tour there must be something about Mr. SHAH. It’s not just that she and the synthpop legends share the same producer – Ben Hillier – but also the love for the dark undertones of life. Last year’s debut album Love Your Dum was filled with such tunes. And if you haven’t discovered it yet, don’t hesitate to do so.

For NOTHING BUT HOPE AND PASSION NADINE SHAH selected her very own ‘Seven Songs’ that show her wide range of influences. There’s even room for Tina Turner. Why not? Click through her selected favourites on the following pages.

Scott Walker – ‘It’s Raining Today’

Scott walker is one of my favourite artists. He successfully made the transition from pop boy band, The Walker brothers, to his recent left field works like ’tilt’. In ‘It’s raining today’ (from his solo album ‘Scott 3’) there is a nod to both eras of his music making.

Nina Simone- ‘Love Me Or Leave Me’

This was one of the jazz standards I used to sing when I first moved to London and worked as a jazz singer in restaurants and bars. I chose Nina Simone’s version because… SHE’S THE BEST!

Tina Turner- ‘Private Dancer’

I do a mean Tina impression and this is my favourite of her songs to sing. It’s become my party piece that all my friends are sick to death of hearing.

KD Lang- ‘You’re OK’

I loved her voice growing up. She doesn’t over sing and every word is sang effortlessly (maybe not the chorus though, I don’t like the chorus!).

Broken Social Scene – ‘Sweetest kill’

Nonsense lyrics and just a really cool sounding track.

Joni Mitchell – ‘A case of you’

A friend played me this track the other week and I was pissed off I hadn’t heard it sooner. Since then I’ve been making up for lost time by playing it repeatedly.

Blur – ‘Out of Time’

Amazing production ;-)
