The old buddy Karl Marx once stated: Being determines consciousness. In that sense we always like to see the places from which beloved artists’ work eminates, because the places we live in are essential to what we feel, think and create. Danish dream pop outfit LOWLY, who already left a great impression at the c/o pop Festival this summer, were so kind to jump in on that and have created a little guide through their homebase Aarhus for us.
Babboe Big
I’m going to start with what is actually not a hang-out, but a good friend in need. Initially bought for getting around town with my daughters but also very handy when biking to the studio.
The Ferry
With now three members of the band living in Copenhagen, we travel a lot back and forth for meetings and also when we set off for a tour. This is the ferry between Jutland and Zealand and a very good on-the-road-meditation for Kasper and I.
Streetcoffee
If you want good coffee in Aarhus this is definitely the place to be and my local coffee pusher. I usually come here to work after taking my oldest girl to kindergarten, so the chances of running into me here between 9 and 13 are pretty good. Nice people, spinning vinyls and really good vibes.
Vesterlauget
Vesterlauget has cheap food, great beer and fantastic owners. When we first started LOWLY this was our favorite place to meet up and it’s a place you keep returning to. Actually we held our very first band meeting here just after forming the band and agreed we were all so busy with other stuff that LOWLY would definitely be a side project (Haha).
The Stadium Lakes
The Stadium Lakes is only 10 minutes walk from my apartment in central Aarhus but feels like being deep inside a deserted forest. It’s a fantastic place to go with your thoughts whenever things get a little overheated. Or you could just feed the ducks and look at the sun with someone you like.
SPOT-Festival
SPOT-festival is an important place for us because it holds so many great memories. Before we even really existed as a band, we were invited to play one of the smaller stages in the foyer, that was one of our very first shows ever. The following year we played in the beautiful Lillesal and had brought along two sign language interpreters who would silently translate our lyrics from the side of the stage. That year we also met Simon from our label Bella Union and we were flying high. Last year we closed the biggest stage on the last day of the festival with lights made by the artist Jakob Kvist and it was a very touching experience for us.
LOWLY are about to perform at the November edition of the ‘Ja Ja Ja’ Club Night in Berlin and Hamburg, next to LAKE JONS and APOTHEK. The event will take place on November 23 in Hamburg and November 24 in Berlin, presented by NOTHING BUT HOPE AND PASSION. Find out more about the line-up and how to get your tickets right here.
