When a lot of people hear about ‘rave’ they automatically associate it with hard synthesizer beats, trashy clothes and people being way too spaced out on drugs and other stuff. Well, some aspects of this might have always been present but others doesn’t stick to the origin of the genre. And if you are not aware of where rave came from, what it originally meant and all those aspects, Canadian wave pop band YOUNG GALAXY is here to give you a joyful lesson as they revisit the golden era of this unique sound in their exclusive NBHAP Guestmix.

The band just released their fourth album Ultramarine – a record that walks the balance of bright optimistic melodies and a nostalgic melancholic undertone as charismatic singer Catherine McCandless recently told NOTHING BUT HOPE AND PASSION in an interview. And it’s an album that is influenced by a lot of different styles and sounds. And who would have thought, classical ‘Madchester Rave’ was part of this. Guitar player Stephen Ramsay was kind enough to mix together a selection of songs he likes to call “3 A.M. Eternal – The YOUNG GALAXY tour of baggy 1989-1991.”

And for those who are still a bit clueless – ‘baggy’ is another slang term for this special fusion of new wave and indie sounds that teamed up with house music by the end of the 1980s. Mainly based around the area of Manchester with famous label Factory Records – hometown of bands like NEW ORDER, HAPPY MONDAYS or A CERTAIN RATIO. The sound was fresh, exciting and highly danceable. It basically was one moment in time with a unique feeling. We would recommend 2002’s movie 24h Party People to you. An entertaining biopic of Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, played by Steve Coogan. No coincidence that is wise words open this special YOUNG GALAXY mix right away. So, without further ado – dim the lights, don’t call the cops and start your weekend with a acid party like it’s 1989.
