Having freshly released her debut EP Taking The Blow what feels like a starting point also marks the end of a long process for Dutch artist Luna Morgenstern. Although growing up in a home full of music she decided to took the safe route first and got herself an ordinary agency job before taking that famous leap in her early twenties and “risk it all” as one so infamously says. The fact that the production of her first EP collided with the global pandemic turned out to be a blessing in a weird way as well as it forced Luna to reflect on her previous life, especially the death of her mother a few years back. The result comes in the gentle form of five mighty alternative pop songs that are as irresistible catchy as they are twisted. Inspired by artists like Caroline Polachek, FKA twigs, Charli XCX and the late great SOPHIE Luna Morgenstern picked the way of showing her emotions with a certain level of confidence.

The EP’s opening song In My Head is a great introduction into her world and also a song we can all relate to following a year in lockdown:

“I wrote this song at the beginning of the first lockdown, I felt trapped and started to reflect on how I dealt with the loss of my mother. It’s about trying to escape yourself and your own thoughts, and at the same time coping with the inability to do so. It expresses a deep wish for a feeling of (temporary) relief.”

There is a bittersweet melancholia in there which only gets more present in the tender acoustic version the songwriter recoreded for us and which you’ll find below the song’s music video. Taking The Blow is out not and you make sure to give it a spin.

Luna also recorded a haunting acoustic version of the song for us which takes it to a whole different level. Don’t miss this one right here.
