Former R.E.M. leading man Michael Stipe is more or less avoiding musical performances ever since his band split up in late 2011 but he’s now searching for the limelight again. Last night the distinctive singer (and his way too epic new beard) showed up at The Tonight Show to perform a haunting version of The Man Who Sold The World by the late DAVID BOWIE. The performance accompanied Stipe’s current involvement in a big DAVID BOWIE tribute concert series in New York City’s historic Carnegie Hall on March 31. The show will also feature performances by PIXIES, MUMFORD AND SONS and more.
Back when BOWIE passed away in January Stipe posted the following short poem on the Facebook page of his former band
Right now, it feels as if the solar system
is off its axis, as if one of our
main planetary anchors has
lost its orbit. That said—I am
certain that wherever Bowie is
now—I want to be there someday
Recently his former bandmate Peter Buck shared a few more details on why the band ended five years ago and ruled out any possibility for a reunion anytime soon. Watch The Man Who Sold The World, performed by Stipe, right here.
