As today confirmed DAVID BOWIE has passed away at the age of 69, following an 18-month long battle of cancer. The news was officially confirmed earlier today via the artist’s Facebook account.

David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.

The news was later also confirmed by his son, director Duncan Jones who posted this heart-wrenching tweet later.

BOWIE just celebrated his 69th birthday on Friday with the release of his 25th studio album Blackstar. According to producer Tony the artist was well aware of the fact that this would be his final recordings. Visconti describes the record as a ‘parting gift’ like he told NME:

‘He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life – a work of Art. He made ‘Blackstar’ for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry.’

He was one of the most influential and celebrated musicians of all time and will surely be misssed. Read the extended obituary, written by NOTHING BUT HOPE AND PASSION‘s editor-in-chief, right here.
