Where women glow and men plunder
There’s something about Australian synthpop that makes it even brighter than many other competitors from the rest of the world. Over the past years bands like CUT COPY, FLIGHT FACILITIES and the almighty EMPIRE OF THE SUN conquered the world with their positive spirit and uplifting pop hits. Melbourne’s MIAMI HORROR followed that DNA and their 2010 debut Illumination was a sweet and sparkling pop jewel, packed with retro-driven good vibrations. After touring the world multiple times the band took some time off, embraced the fact that they were now partly also living in Los Angeles, and now return with a second album called All Possible Futures. Inspired by everything from NEW ORDER to FLEETWOOD MAC and PAUL SIMON the band wanted to, in their own words, ‘ensure that we creatively explored every direction we could possibly go.’ Quite an ambitious plan.
Pop cultural cocktail
Right from the start MIAMI HORROR make sure that there’s no space for moaners on All Possible Futures. The four-piece delivers positive vibes from start to finish and a record dedicated to sunshine, love and the power of bringing people together only by the force of the groove. American Dream starts with sunny guitars in finest 60s tradition before a gentle disco beat unfolds its power. The already known single Real Slow, featuring singer Sarah Chernoff, follows that slow grooving spirit before Love Like Mine accelerates the record and explodes in a furious mix of funk and disco. Pop cultural references at every corner. MIAMI HORROR mix all sorts of influences from the past 40 years together. Synthpop, Disco, Funk, Soul, Soft Rock – there’s room for everything.
Avoid real life
If you happen to be an open-minded person when it comes to popular music then you will embrace the variety in the music of the Australian group. All Possible Futures might have a little problem with a certain coherency as it constantly switches between smooth retro pop (Colours In The Sky) to funky disco killers (Out Of Sight, Wild Motion) and even 70s-influenced radio rock (Another Rise, Another Fall). But in the end the wild combination works surprisingly well as it is combined by its sunny vibes and positive spirit. It’s a psychedelic mixtape of slightly naive little pop gems (in terms of its lyrical content) that are destined to brutally rip you off your daily life and take you in a colourful fantasy world, somewhere at a beautiful beach, far off the madness of a civilized world and its self-imposed rules. MIAMI HORROR deliver the soundtrack to your personal vacation, an escape strategy for your ears. If you can get over the fact that negative thoughts and the reality in general has now place on All Possible Futures it is a highly entertaining pop trip.
MIAMI HORROR once again celebrate light and love on their second album ‘All Possible Futures’ as they deliver slick and sunny synthpop anthems.
