Since we’re constantly searching for music’s next potential pop sensation, it was only a matter of time before we stumbled upon Dutch artist Charlot Henzen aka Charly Haze. Backfire is the latest single by the still way too unknown talent that operates from London and if you happen to love addictive synthpop with an edgy twist in the tradition of groups like IDER and CHVRCHES this one might easily become a favourite of yours thanks to the pumping groove and the catchy hook that subtly sneaks its way into your head.

The powerful and uplifting anthem however was born out of Henzen’s darker past. She decided to release music unter her new alias following a two-year recovery from a traumatic brain injury, caused by a severe car accident. She explains: “I was left with neck/back injuries and PCSS (post-concussion syndrome), experiencing a constant sensory overload, memory loss and chronic fatigue. My life was drastically put on hold and there were no guarantees for a full recovery.” Being forced to spend most of her time at home, writing songs was a therapeutic way to work through her trauma and to come out of it even stronger and more confident. Backfire indeed is such a statement that sees Charly Haze facing those bleaker moments.

“’Backfire’ captures the contrast between the darkest days of despair and the fighting spirit; losing control over your body and doing whatever it takes to regain it. However, it is not a sad song; the emphasis lies on perseverance, courage, and invincibility.”

Luckily, the young artist is back in full shape and has recovered but the fighting spirit remains a powerful source for her creativity. So, without further ado – please jump into the colourful musical microcosm of this sparkling new pop sensation.

Charly Haze also recorded a haunting reduced version of Backfire for us which you can enjoy right here.
