Jean Michel Jarre - M83 - Glory

Context?

If you happen to be a fan of electronic music you should be aware of French producer JEAN-MICHEL JARRE, his legacy and the way he influenced the genre. He had an effect on pretty much everyone from AIR to RÖYKSOPP. And Anthony Gonzalez aka M83 is another famous follower of the 66-years old synthesizer expert. After a couple of years without a proper new album the legendary man is now preparing his comeback album. And he was wise enough to hire Gonzalez for its first single Glory.

Why Should I Watch This?

Because the song itself is a powerful mixture of the two musical words that happen to clash here. Besides that, the clip itself is also quite interesting. Directed by Lisa Paclet it features some sort of abstract idea of the Olympic games idea; almost like an absurd take on the concept of sports in general. Paclet on her idea: ‘I wanted to glorify useless action though a series of absurd sports, preformed by athletes that run after unreachable, constantly shifting goals. Their performances are scrutinized by a uniform, stoic, public whose reaction to their efforts is synchronized and coordinated like a well-oiled machine.’ She continues: ‘As the clip progresses, the athletes subtly rebel against their pointless task though deliberate action of failure, breaking the repetitive cycle to which they are constrained. Their failures reveal a breach of humanity, which ricochets within the public, who in turn reacts in a progressively entropic fashion.’ We couldn’t agree more.

Anything Else?

M83 is not the only featured guest on the yet untitled comeback record of JARRE as it will also feature GESAFFELSTEIN, 3D of MASSIVE ATTACK and a few more. Looks like a quite interesting clash of the generations, right?
