A lot of musical duos claim to bring the ‘best of both worlds’ when the two parts of it collaborate with each other. Quite often this remains a standard promo phrase but in the case of Belgian two-piece JOY WELLBOY it is nothing but the truth, resulting in a powerful sound that combines the darkness of INTERPOL-esque wave rock with electronic beats and the soulful voice of singer Joy Adegoke. With that special formula the two Berlin-based musicians manage to deliver a sound that is both – cold and haunting plus soulful and emotional. It’s really kind of hard to describe but there’s something truly captivating in their music. The new JOY WELLBOY album is called Wedding and arrives on May the 4th via BPitch Control. NOTHING BUT HOPE AND PASSION also presents the forthcoming tour dates in the adopted home country of these two. Find the dates below and a few more infos on the crafted newcomers in our little ‘Introducing Q&A’ right here.
First… to clarify your album title. Is it ‘Wedding’ as in ‘marriage’ or do you mean the Berlin district?
We started to live in Wedding.. and that’s where the whole album started. The inspiration comes from there. We lived in a small one bedroom apartment in that district. Everything is written, recorded, produced in a room where we also slept, made love, ate, draw, practiced and read. I guess we loved that limitation of space. It forces you to adapt your way of creating. It forces you to be honest with each other and you see each other from very closeby. It was very confronting and interesting. When the songs were there it was obvious that we had to call the album Wedding.
Imagine you have to create a mixtape to introduce people to your music. Which artists/ tracks, aside of your own, would be part of it?

I Wanna Be Yours by ARCTIC MONKEYS
Candy by MORPHINE
Two Weeks by FKA TWIGS

Would you rather be a dragon or have a dragon?
I would rather have a dragon. A dragon that is free to go wherever he wants to go but loves my company. Everyone has a dragon. You just have to find him.
What tastes better… Fries in Brussels or Currywurst in Berlin?
D e f e n i t e l y :: FRIES in Belgium!! Avec des moules nature!!
I saw you last year performing at the Berghain and I really enjoyed it. What can people expect from the next tour?
We want to keep the set up basic like it is now. The new album is another story. It’s more about the two of us. it will be all about the atmosphere. We wanna build everything up around our loop stations .. build an electric fuzz. Bring some stripped down versions.
If you as a duo wouldn’t work together as musicians is there any other job you two could do perfectly together as team?
We would love to work near the ocean. Feed the turtles or clean the beach, collect some oysters…Some place where we can go snorkeling and stare at the blue for hours.
The music & culture industry is currently about to redefine itself. Do you feel like being completely and utterly at the its mercy, or should things be seen as a chance for artists?
Frankly… I don’t want to think too much about it.. I just want everyone to keep on creating good art because it will save us all
We are about the elements hope and passion. What is JOY WELLBOY all about?
We can only do what we do with passion, otherwise it will never sound how we want it to sound. It’s all about creating energy and giving energy. Hope is the glue between it all. I thrust life and I believe in Love .What’s for you will not pass you by. If there’s a big wave make sure to catch it!!!
