Chienne Lucas

CHIENNE LUCAS is all about ambiguity and distance. First of all, there’s the lack of any firm sense of identity attached to the project. He/she/they hide behind borrowed images and aesthetics, with a Soundcloud page full of old YouTube stills and Japanese chocolate advertisements. What we do know is that they’re probably Danish, and they released the EP Left Hand Orientation last month on Danish cassette label Infinite Waves.

Diagonal One is the lead track from that EP, a mixture of synths, digital squall and kinetic momentum, like a less abrasive internet update of THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN. Buried underneath all that noise is a vocal that injects the song with a sense of wistfulness and longing. As with their disguised identity, there’s a sense of concealment about the song. The lyrics are hidden beneath distortion and fuzz, and tend to fade into indecipherability at crucial moments. There is exposure and vulnerability here, but the listener is always kept at a distance.
