South London Vibes

When people mention the music that comes out of a certain geographical location, one would immediately have an inkling of a specific sound. The culture, history and even political climate of that area would be perfectly displayed, amidst the melodic buildups and repetitive synth interludes. South London has a reputation for being dismal, depressive and dirty in a 2014 survey done by property developer ‘Rightmove.’ The perfect vibes and setting for creative types delving into the depths of their souls, breathing everything out into their music. The likes of JAMES BLAKE and SOHN, with their breathy, atmospheric melodies have defined the South London musical scene.

Soundtrack of your mind

The latest addition to the party, DEMS is the perfect embodiment of everything that is South London. When you’re in solitude and your past experiences play in your mind like a film without sound, DEMS’ debut album, Muscle Memory, is the perfect soundtrack.

Tight, alright

Opening track Sinking In The Sorry is a complete exploration of space and time, with slowed down YOUNG LEAN-esque kick-drums and dreamy falsettos. Made For Myself sounds eerily like a BLAKE production. Only standout track Lioness harnesses vocal remodeling as fadeout background noise, steadying the listener before bursting into the dancey climax of Desire. In all? The whole album is tightly produced, burgeoning with South London vibes – however, that is also their downfall, being too swallowed up in the atmosphere of their location rather than making more of an effort in defining themselves.

DEMS’ debut album ‘Muscle Memory’ unfolds perfectly produced electronic vibes in the spirit of successful acts like JAME BLAKE and SOHN while slightly also lacking of a certain originality.
