The CMJ MUSIC MARATHON is aptly named. This event is NYC has more than a thousand bands in more than 50 venues in Manhattan and Brookly, during 5 days. NOTHING BUT HOPE AND PASSION ran for hours to come back with the best new acts.
DUOLOGUE: The band from London looks atypical on stage, with a violin but no drums they sound different. They began the show with their single Underworld, perfect to discover their electro-indie music. Song & Danse, their debut album was released in February 2013.
LANDSHAPES: Another London based band. 3 girls and a guy. LANDSHAPES was on everyone’s lips during the festival : “They’re so different”, “These girls rock”, “A band to watch out !”… We couldn’t miss their show, and what a show !! Their descrpition on the facebook page is “Wonky pop” which makes sense. They will be a band that you love or hate but they will not leave you indifferent.
TORRES: is Mackenzie Scott, a young girl from Nashville. Her self-titled album released in January 2013 reminds a bit of PJ HARVEY or CAT POWER on her first albums. The single Honey reveals both the sweetness and power of TORRES music.
HALF MOON RUN: After tours with Patrick Watson and MUMFORD & SONS, they’re currently on tour for headline shows. This catchy-pop band from Montreal is growing up every day. They sometimes sound close to MUMFORD & SONS, JEFF BUCKLEY or RADIOHEAD but it’s always good ! In case you’ve never heard their music here is the strange video for their song Call Me In The Afternoon.
HAERTS: Indie-pop band from Brooklyn just released their first EP Hemiplegia. You would probably like their music if you’re into bands like CHVRCHES or BEACH HOUSE. Their atmospheric music and Nini Fabi’s voice were able to make the audience of Bowery Ballroom speechless. Check out the track Wings.
KODALINE: Tjey’re from Dublin and offer a brilliant pop music. Their songs swing between ballades and powerful rock. KODALINE is a solid value on stage and build a serious career right now.
If you’re curious and have A LOT OF times you can look at the line-up, there was plenty of great bands, but we couldn’t talk about all of them…
See you next year CMJ Music Marathon
