Swedish three-piece Spunsugar have become frequent guests here on NOTHING BUT HOPE AND PASSION over the past two years but as they continue to drop wonderful music on a regualar basis and still haven’t gained international fame and fortune we’ll simply continue to recommend these fellas to you. There’s also a fitting occasion since the Swedes just dropped a new EP called Things That I Confuse. The four new songs continue to follow the path the stand-alone single (You Never) Turn Around opened back in January as they see Spunsugar moving away from the noisy vibe of their brilliant 2020 debut album Drive-Through Chapel and towards a more straightlined sound. However, the gloomy goth and post-punk roots are luckily still sensible on the new EP and so is the noise – they are all just a bit more defined.

Elin Ramstedt, Cordelia Moreau, and Felix Sjöström deliver emotional intensity with kicking drums, sharp basslines and all the reverb you can get on that sort of music. However, the brilliant songwriting still shines through, giving all the sinister teen angst vibes a proper melodic setting. By the end of 2021, Spunsugar aren’t afraid of a catchy hook every now and then but they also don’t force it which is a nice thing to witness in the daily haze of algorithm-optimized production these days. Things That I Confuse is an EP that deserves all the love from fellow lovers of darker music and here’s the title-track to proof that.
