Tough news for all fans of American indie rock institution DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE. As the group now announced multi-instrumentalist and founding member Chris Walla is about to leave the band after 17 years. According to a statement released on Seattle-based blog Slog Walla is longing for ‘the unknown.’

He furthermore states: ‘I will miss being a quarter of this band, and will support whatever course DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE chooses from here… Deciding to leave the band was not, and is not, easy. It’s really, really sad. I love my bandmates, and I’m proud of what we’ve done, and mercifully, those things don’t change with my departure. Moving forward, my plans are simply to continue making music, producing records, and erring on the side of benevolence and beauty whenever possible. Darkness may find me, but I shall never choose it.’

In the same statement Walla also confirmed that DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE just finished the work on their 8th studio album with producer Rich Costey. Details on when we can expect the follow-up to 2011’s Codes And Keys are expected soon. Although the split seems amicable it definitely marks the beginning of a new chapter for the band since Walla previously produced all records of the four-piece. To ease the pain – here’s the good-old Soul Meets Body from the Plans album.
