While we criticized a certain indecisiveness at last year’s MELT Festival in terms of it’s musical direction it looks like the beloved summer festival is learning it’s leasson and is shaping its profile for 2019. With a stronger focus on urban pop and hip hop as well as the strongest and hippest figures of international electronic music club culture MELT Festival is further establishing a niche in which the soulful pop of shootingstar Jorja Smith can exist in the same cosmos like the techno vibes of Solumn and The Black Madonna or the future folk of Bon Iver and the experimental sounds of Arca. The first line-up wave back in December already hinted in that direction and the now revealed full line-up for the 2019 festival underlines that.

The latest additions include club favourites like Adana Twins, HVOB and exciting new producer Kaytranada as well as Swedish cloud rap pioneer Yung Lean, buzzing future R&B duo Ider, Drake’s favourite new rapper Octavian or indie music shootingstar Nilüfer Yanya which we recently already recommended to you. They join forces with already confirmed artists like Skepta, Modeselektor, Four Tet, and Ross From Friends. Curation is becoming a key element in the new understanding of MELT Festival. Various Berlin clubs and art institutions organize the programme of the smaller stages while The Black Madonna and Solumn are hosting their own stages. Same goes for Bonobo who’s organizing his own pre-party on July 18. With its 2019 edition MELT is rejuvenating itself, freeing itself from the indie/electronica from the past and creating its own niche. So, it’s a natural change that will affect the vibe of the event but it’s definitely an exciting one. Will you attend?
