Ilana’s “Track 1” Is Off-Piste But Sweet Blues Rock

Ilana Blumberg is usually found in her role as a fashion designer/ textile artist, so fittingly in a crudely-crafted piece of wordplay sort of way, there are a lot of threads leading into her new Ilana EP. Her musical involvement dates back to 2009 and Yuck’s debut album, which she sang on, and that band’s Daniel Blumberg is at the helm of this EP – which is actually three years old, having been recorded back in 2017. And now it’s seeing the light of day, and we’re given the task of trying to figure out what to make of opener Track 1. It starts off barely present, with a couple of notes scattered around the opening minute and a half, but eventually gets itself off the couch and blooms into a lovely, sadly-sweet blues song. It’s a warm opener to the EP, as well as a hint of what’s waiting inside, curious songs that refuse to take a straight line to anywhere, but are all the better for it. Ilana is out now on Memorials Of Distinction
