There is something lurking in the shadows on Teeth, the recent single release by the Australian artist and producer Mallrat, aka Grace Shaw. Heavy grunge pop riffs conjure an ominous “it” that the artist is singing about. “It’s in my chair, looks like me”, her gentle vocals sing over a riff of noisy distorted electric guitars. The gloomy instrumentation gives the single an edgy twist. Teeth precedes Mallrat’s forthcoming debut record Butterfly Blue out on May 13. On it the prizes pop songwriter invites to see the world through her eyes. And while that can be a haunting ride like on Teeth, there is something inherently beautiful about the sinister soundscape.
