Krista Papista released her second album, the anti-nationalism manifesto Sultana, at the end of last year, around which time we brought you the premiere of her inverted Orthodox video Alexandra. A couple of months on, and she’s back with another video, though this time out the dark dramatics are off the table and instead the set-up is more simple set-up, a road trip through her native Cyprus. While Cypriot Requiem, like most Papista songs, is a layered creature (she says it’s “a suicide ballad infused with double meanings and sarcastic humour. It expresses a gratitude to the simplicity and euphoria of Mediterranean attitude and pleasures; the lemon tree represents a comfort zone that you’ve learned to embrace while rotting under it in despair”), it’s got a breezy grace and an airy sadness that lends itself well to its surroundings, a singalong song for a straining world.
