Olivia Rodrigo gained almost wordwide internet notoriety earlier this year for her single drivers license. Saving her from being pigeonholed into ‘teenage girl meets TikTok territory’ is her new single deja vu which, also coming with an excellent and original music video, points to a potentially unexpected alternative side in her upcoming music. Whilst her previous single implied more intimate storytelling, deja vu channels Lorde’s casual Melodrama which eventually swells into something more grandiose. Starting off with a twinkly melody Rodrigo brings the song into a psychotic finale, acted out well in a pastel coloured psychedelic music video. Although very much a pop song, deja vu smacks of something more interesting, as well as an artist who is open to future experimentation.
