Sugar-Sweet And Sinister Meet Indie Rock On Sindy’s “Horror Head”

Ruby Empress frontman Tom Serner debuted his Sindy solo-project last year, with a sound that pick’n’mixed some of the sharpest touches and tones from rock’s history and freshened them up into stylishly scrappy indie rock. Now he’s stepping things up with the project, with a debut album due later this year, and lead single Horror Head is the first indication of how that might sound. It’s a song that takes its philosophy from the Velvet Underground’s Rock And Roll, keeping things simple, scruffy, and sweetly-melodic, with a guitar solo drawing a manic zigzag across the back end of the song. Over all that, Serner’s vampiric lyrics give the song its edge (EDITOR’S NOTE: DO NOT SAY ‘BITE’), and it all makes for a free-spirited, instantly memorable joy-ride of an indie rock song. About the album, also called Horror Head, Serner described it as “seriously deranged four-chord songs […] A lot of the tracks are just about trying to find a place in this confusing existence. They’re attempts to put these really big abstract ideas into the short-form of a song”. It’s out on April 23 on PNKSLM.
