Delicate. Fragile. Tender. Take your pick. Regardless, there’s nothing heavy about the latest single from Elena Steri, Heavy Rotations. Steri, an up-and-coming songwriter from Nuremberg has quickly established herself as a purveyor of charming and personal music with a knack for subtle layering. Following on from 2019’s debut album, A Sleepy Kind Of Blue, Steri has released Heavy Rotations, which combines sparse percussion and softly-softly vocals to create a dreamy soundscape. Co-produced with Jan Kerscher, this track sees Steri ditch the Ukelele which featured prominently on A Sleepy Kind Of Blue and places the focus on Steri’s airy vocals instead. It’s a song about fragility, about how close we can be to breaking at any point, and about the uncertainty of relationships. The opening lyrics convey the sort of yearning that Steri captures so well on Heavy Rotations: “What if you poked me in the chest / And your finger broke like you were cracking / Into a rotted plank and dust came out / And I just crumbled into nothing.” A masterclass in emotive song-writing. This is definitely something that fans of British singer Dodie will want to get in on. Heavy Rotations is out now on ListenRecords.
