Formed in 2021 as a side-project by twin sisters, Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn both from long lasting Canadian alternative rock band Courage My Love, Softcult quickly found their own DNA with a handful of sweet singles they released throughout the past year. Gaslight is their first track of 2022 and a highly melody-loving piece of fuzzy indie-rock that addresses “the turmoil of existing within an abusive relationship.” Mercedes Arn-Horn further elaborates on the story of the song and the issue of “gaslighting” itself that deserves more awareness: “We wrote this song about gaslighting and how it really messes with your head and your perception of reality. Being in a relationship that constantly makes you question your decisions and actions, your feelings and emotions, even your soundness of mind. It’s a tactic that many abusers and groomers will use to tear down your defences and make you easier to manipulate. We wanted to raise awareness of this manipulation technique so that whoever hears the song will be able to recognize those red flags if they encounter that kind of behaviour.” Softcult will release their EP Year Of The Snake on February the 4th, so please keep an eye on these two.
