Molchat Doma’s “Ne Smeshno” Is A Fitting Soundtrack For Belarus Right Now

These days if feels impossible to present music from Belarus and not ask for its political content. But like my colleague Natalie already explained a few months ago just the fact that post-punk band Molchat Doma is making the music they make is a political statement itself and they surely picked the right time to release their new album Monument this November while the Belarusian people are still protesting on the streets for their freedom. The band’s latest single Ne Smeshno (translated as ‘not funny’) does not directly address that but like before the bleak character of the music Molchat Doma make is a fitting soundtrack for the current desperation and helplessness. Filmmaker Darya Zhuk was indeed inspired by the ongoing revlotionary vibe when he shot the gloomy music video for the song. Although the “Waking up after quarantine” vibe of the clip is also a clear nod to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic it can also be seen as a metaphor for people waking up after 26 years of dictatorship. Molchat Doma continue to be a unique phenomenon and we surely are excited about Monument which arrives on November 13 via Sacred Bones.
